Fallbrook - The Avocado Capital of the World
Set amongst gentle rolling hills, lush avocado groves, ancient oak trees, equestrian and walking trails, and a mild Mediterranean weather, Fallbrook is an urban escape you don’t want to miss.
Fallbrook is often called the avocado capital of the world, at least that’s what the local San Diegans like to think it is. Fallbrook is an established historical country town located in north San Diego county. It is located off Interstate 15 about 50 minutes drive from San Diego downtown, 15 minutes from Temecula Valley Wine Country and 20 minutes from the beautiful beaches of Pacific Ocean in Oceanside, CA. Once rich in rural landscapes, the area between Fallbrook and Bonsall has experienced a lot of suburban growth, everything from full-blown subdivisions to large-acreage lots with mini-mansions placed on them. For many Fallbrook is still the "avocado capital of the world," but perhaps not for long.
The Lilac Bridge over I-15 at the southern entrance to Bonsall and Fallbrook makes a great gateway to San Diego coming down south from Riverside County. This is the famous bridge that has dramatic soaring arch construction. The Lilac Road Bridge is a very dramatic and attractive bridge. It looks like a giant scythe poised over the roadway. The way the arch joins the deck looks organic, more like the way a plant grows than something made by humans. The bridge is also known as the Rainbow Bridge because of its arched shape.
Local newspaper Fallbrook Village News is a great source of Fallbrook local news, entertainment and other events. If you are interested in Arts you can visit the Art Center at Fallbrook or join the Fallbrook Arts Association which is dedicated to supporting art in the community by sponsoring demonstrations, workshops, festivals, exhibits and two highly acclaimed shows in Fallbrook every year. The Fallbrook Arts Center is located at 103 South Main Street at Alvarado in Fallbrook. The Fallbrook Village Square is "the" spot and special event venue in the historic Fallbrook downtown area. The Square plays host to art shows, a farmer's market, concerts, and the Fallbrook Veterans Honor Roll.
If you enjoy hiking, there are several beautiful Hiking trails in Fallbrook. The Los Jilgueros Preserve, Heller's Bend, St. Margarita River County "Park" and St. Margarita River Trail are few of the more popular trails in Fallbrook, CA. The Santa Margarita River is one of the last wild rivers in Southern California, and is relatively unspoiled in its journey from the Temecula River Gorge, starting at I-15 in Temecula, along with its main tributaries, Rainbow Creek, Sandia Creek, and De Luz River. Thanks to the Fallbrook Land Conservancy (FLC) and the Fallbrook Public Utility District (FPUD), a trail through FPUD land was opened in 1996. The trail is 2.8 miles (one-way) with 400' elevation gain from the trailhead at Sandia Creek Drive to its end at the corner of Willow Glen and Stagecoach Lane. A longer hike is possible by connecting to the Rainbow Creek Trail toward Red Mountain.
Nature lovers will also fall in love with Live Oak Park. You are guaranteed to enjoy the journey to this jewel of a destination by traveling under the protective canopy of ancient oaks to the 16-square-mile park that features barbeques, playgrounds, baseball diamonds, a sand volleyball court, and more. Nestled amongst the oaks, with gentle streams nearby, the park is a local favorite for festive family picnics, restful breaks, and popular community events.
As you make your way into the historic Fallbrook downtown area, there are many wonderful discoveries to explore along the way. A full afternoon of discovery awaits you on Fallbrook's Main Street, with its historic 19th century architecture, antique shops and easy accessibility. Shop for the unusual and enjoy a cluster of one of a kind shops, galleries, and local restaurants. A visit to Fallbrook’s Historical Society Museum is also well worth the effort. A visit to the museum is a must for time travel back into the rich past of the Greater Fallbrook area.
Less than 10 minutes away from the historic Fallbrook downtown area, visitors can go wine tasting at two local wineries. Fallbrook Winery was completed in 1981 and was used primarily for Champagne production through the late 1980’s. In the early 1990’s the winery began producing high quality red and white varietals. Today Fallbrook Winery is one of the leaders in California’s emerging South Coast wine region. Elise James Winery grows several varietals, making wines that are full bodied yet soft and drinkable with or without food. The family has grown grapes in California for more than 100 years and enjoys bringing friends together with food, wine and traditional old world recipes.
Just minutes away from Fallbrook is the lovely, peaceful town of Bonsall where you will find a significant number of private horse breeders, trainers, and boarding centers. Bonsall is home to the prestigious Vessels Stallion Farm, which is responsible for some of the most desirable Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses on both the national and international level. The widely respected San Luis Rey Downs Training Center can also be found in nearby Bonsall. It is the only auxiliary training track that has been continuously approved since 1984 by the California Horse Racing Board. This widely acclaimed facility offers a one-mile track and a smaller training track, as well as an equine pool and many other amenities. Fallbrook also offers a unique program to help youths and adults who have physical challenges by giving them an opportunity for improvement through a horse’s strong, rhythmic motion in the REINS Therapeutic Horsemanship Program. This worthy, non-profit effort is assisted by teams of volunteers of all ages that help the disabled riders as well as care for the horses.
